Vincent Stigliano is a “baby boomer” who contracted polio before the Salk vaccine was developed. After a six-month hospital stay, he was sent home with crutches and braces to try to live a “normal” life. The process of dealing with his disability led him to dedicate his life to helping others, both through his career as a social worker and volunteer work as an ordained minister. His first book, “disABILITY: The Power of a Positive Attitude Through the Struggles of Life”, describes that process more completely.
Vincent has impacted children and adolescents throughout his career while working in different job assignments. At Trumbull County Children's Services, where he served for over thirty years, he started as a caseworker, then supervisor, then Director of the Children’s Treatment Center for mild to moderately disturbed children, and finally as the Director of Social Services. There he led over eighty staff members in the work of protecting children and serving families in distress. During these years he also began teaching part-time at Youngstown State University in the Social Work department, which he continued to do for over thirty years. Also, while still working at Children Services, he was hired by the state to train case workers throughout Ohio, which he did for about twenty-five years. After retiring from Children Services Vincent became a part-time guidance counselor at Waren Christian School.
Throughout his life Vincent has maintained a strong faith in God. He often explains to his clients that he always believed that God had a plan and purpose for his life which played a vital part in giving him hope for the future. As a young adult he began working with children and youth at his local church. This led to more volunteer opportunities in the regional and national departments of his denomination. In all, he spent over twenty years in youth work. As the President of the Youth Department for the Christian Churches of North America, which included over 100 churches, he visited more than 75 of those churches during the last six years of his involvement in youth ministry.
After earning a Master’s degree in clinical social work, Vincent began a private counseling ministry in his home which later became New Hope Christian Counseling. He has met clients in that venue for over forty five years, and still continues that ministry. In addition, he volunteers with a group that works with individuals living with disabilities.
During his college years and later Vincent ventured into the music world. He, his siblings and a cousin formed a group called the Melotones. They traveled in the northeast and produced a record album. Later, he organized a youth musical group, the Brothers and the Sisters, which produced two more record albums. In 1977 Vincent married his wife of forty seven years and they have two daughters and seven grandchildren. They had attended the same church since childhood but never thought of each other as dating material. Vince says he was convinced she was “out of his league.”
